Cellbond supports International Women’s Day 2020

Cellbond supports International Women’s Day – #IWD2020 –  as an opportunity to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while promoting more action to accelerate gender equality.

This year’s theme of #EachforEqual – ‘an equal world is an enabled world’, is drawn from a notion of ‘Collective Individualism’, meaning that collectively we can help create a gender equal world.

As an engineering company, Cellbond actively supports and promotes International Women’s Day to encourage more women to undertake engineering as a career. According to the Wise Campaign (2019), women account for just over 10% of engineering professionals and, although this has doubled in the last decade, further actions are still needed in order to encourage more women to get into the STEM workforce.

There is still a long road ahead to achieving gender equality worldwide. In her Sunday times bestselling book, ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed For Men’, the leading campaigner and writer Caroline Criado Perez brings together a range of case studies, stories and new research from across the world that illustrate the hidden ways in which women are forgotten. In the automotive industry for instance, studies show that women are significantly more likely to be seriously injured or die in a vehicle crash than men. This raised significant calls for government bodies and consumer organisations worldwide, such as the New Car Assessment Programmes (NCAP), to include a female crash test dummy representing a female driver for a gendered breakdown in their vehicle safety tests. Cellbond was delighted to welcome Caroline to Huntingdon last week as part of her research into crash test dummies for an article she is writing for the Sunday Times to mark International Women’s Day. Caroline is pictured with ATD Engineering Manager Derek Winter and Project Engineer Will Marshall.

A consequence of International Women’s Day is that individuals, groups and organisations are encouraged to start a discussion to look at examples of gender bias, both visible and invisible, and understand the profound effect they have on women.

Nevertheless, attitudes towards gender roles are changing. As part of the #IWD2020 campaign, UN Women also issued a 2020 theme of ‘I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Right’ to illustrate that women’s ideas, mindsets, actions and experiences equally influence the innovations that shape our societies.

Cellbond takes pride in being a globally diverse company and we understand that a diverse team helps us to be more innovative, creative and productive.  Our shared responsibility and collective actions to challenge stereotypes, encourage advocacy and an inclusive mindset can help play a role in removing barriers and create a gender equal world.
