Crash Test Barriers

Cellbond are at the forefront of deformable aluminium crash test barrier design and production and have been considered international industry specialists for nearly 30 years. We were the first company to offer a full range of deformable aluminium honeycomb barriers and many existing barrier types were developed with essential involvement from Cellbond.

Cellbond’s renowned blue barriers are instantly recognizable, but we also manufacture grey barriers and can supply other colours on request.  We have worked closely with safety experts including EuroNCAP, IIHS and NHTSA in order to develop deformable aluminium barriers that will cover a variety of regulatory standards and test protocols within Europe, the US and other countries.

Advanced 2000 Side Impact Barrier

In 1999, after several years of development, Cellbond introduced a new barrier design for side impact tests according to ECE R95: The Advanced-2000. Various crush forces, progressively changing throughout the barrier, characterise each single block. This is achieved by a special manufacturing process, pioneered by Cellbond in 1994, during which the aluminium honeycomb elements are differentially etched.

AEMDB Side Impact Barrier

The AE-MDB barrier was developed in answer to the ever-increasing size and stiffness of cars. The original prototype was made by Cellbond in 2001, and it was first presented in 2003, at the International Enhanced Safety of Vehicles (ESV) conference.

IIHS Side Impact Barrier

Cellbond has a history of introducing new technologies and developing crash test barriers in close collaboration with its customers. In conjunction with the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Cellbond developed a moving deformable barrier for side impact in 2000-2001 based on the FMVSS 214 barrier, which is used for the assessment of motor vehicle protection in side impact collisions by car manufacturers and test laboratories worldwide. More recently, Cellbond have supported the IIHS with their Side Impact Research Update project; redesigning the side impact barrier to reflect the increasing prevalence of SUVs and Pickups in use on roads.

NHTSA FMVSS214 Side Impact Barrier

Cellbond introduced the current method of honeycomb core certification and testing for energy absorption applications. This concept was adopted by NHTSA into the build requirements of FMVSS 214 and by EEVC Working Group 11 for the European frontal offset barrier.

NHTSA Frontal Small Overlap/Oblique Barrier

Cellbond has been working in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US on a new research moving deformable barrier (RMDB) for frontal impacts that can recreate vehicle to vehicle collisions in two ways; small overlap impacts (SOI) and oblique offset impacts.

Frontal Offset Barrier

The Frontal Offset barrier was developed by EEVC WG11 with support from Cellbond and was taken over into the European regulation for occupant protection in frontal impacts that came into force in 1996.

Full Width Frontal Barrier

Cellbond produces the full range of deformable crash test barriers. Various barriers and test procedures for occupant safety are well established. More recently the issue of partner safety i.e. vehicle compatibility has been added to research efforts of various international institutes.

MPDB Frontal Barrier

Euro NCAP approved supplier. Cellbond’s Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier (MPDB) is used for the assessment of motor vehicle protection in frontal impact collision according to the Euro NCAP 2020 Protocol. The MPDB crash test replicates a collision with another vehicle where 50% of the test vehicle makes a head-on collision with the 1400kg moving trolley, mounted with the aluminium deformable barrier at the impact speed of 50km/h for both the vehicle and the trolley travelling at an identical speed.
