In a safety focused society, the reduction of the effects of impact injury, to pedestrians and vehicle occupants alike, is becoming of ever increasing importance.

A way this can be achieved is by making vehicles' bumpers and bonnets less aggressive towards pedestrians if an accident occurs. Various international bodies such as EEVC Working Group 10 and Working Group 17, ISO and JARI (Japan Automobile Research Institute), ACEA (European Association of Automobile Manufacturers) have been working on pedestrian safety test procedures.
